Rick is an Order Member, which means he has inherited the Power of the Angels. Ann is now a single mother, as her husband died less than a year ago. Allison is an only child, now fatherless. But together, they make for an exciting tale of love and loss.

Rick is sent on a mission to bind Allison’s Power, but he got more than he bargained for as her mother, Ann, stole his heart in the process.

Read this PREQUEL to find out more about Ann’s and Rick’s relationship, and to see how it all began before Allison turns 21 in Power.

*Note- Throughout the entire Descendant Trilogy, you will hear from multiple Point of Views. This is important so that you can see the entire story, from all angles, not just one persons view of it.

**Note- This is a NOVELLA, meaning it is NOT a full length novel. It is approximately 22000 words.

With prequels, it's sometimes hard to determine the best time within the series to read them. For me, I love the surprise of the mystery unfolding; I hate spoilers. Reading Arise first will give you a firm understanding of the Descendant Trilogy world, but does ruin the surprise that comes along of learning along with Allison in Power who she really is. On the other hand, having read Power first, you do know how it will all end for Rick and Ann, at least for now.

I loved Power and was really excited to see the Ann/Rick relationship story told. Indeed this is a sweet and subtle romance; it's not really paranormal in that, even though Rick is paranormal, none of the happenings of the book are truly paranormal.

Ann's a beautiful character. I loved to see her grow past the heartbreak of losing her husband. Her loss is handled so well in Arise and I appreciated that her feelings weren't just suddenly altered by the appearance of some uber hot man. Instead she moves on in her own power, just with the nurturing of Rick.

All those good things being said, I must state a few complaints. One is the information dumping we experience as Rick provides details on himself and his world. Also, there's a lot of detailed description with the "telling not showing" clearly present. Overall, the pacing was very slow due to these issues combined with the nature of most romance stories to be slower paced.

Arise The Descendant Trilogy eBook Theresa M Jones Reviews

I loved reading about Rick and Ann, long before Allison ever started her journey.
Its a short, fast read.
Very enjoyable

Arise is meant to be a prequel to the first book in the series, Power. Arise is told primarily in the viewpoint of Rick, an Order member, who becomes like a father to Ally. It is fine as a stand alone also because the author includes enough background information that the reader knows what's going on. I really enjoyed Arise. It was neat to get to read about the attachment forming between Rick and Ally and her mother.

After reading Power I was certainly excited for a chance to read Arise. I love getting the chance to learn more about characters and see into their past.
Arise takes place when Allison is five years old and alternates between Anne (Allison's mother) and Rick's perspective. It was sweet seeing the relationship between the three characters grow. By the end I was secretly hoping for an alternate reality where Rick got to stay after binding Allison's Power, but alas it wasn't so. I know it was all for the best, but dagnabbit Rick just clicked with them.
While I definitely enjoyed a glimpse into the past, I felt this story lacked in a couple areas and truth be told it may be more of my personal preference for reading. The first thing is it felt wordy, but lacked in dialogue at the same time. It felt a bit repetitive and some of the dialogue felt pointless really. For example Rick and Anne would exchange a basic greeting and then the rest of the scene was explained to the us by who it was telling the story for that chapter. I love dialogue. I think it's a great way to get to know a character, and this actually brings me to my second issue I guess you could call it.
I feel like there were soo many missed opportunities because the character telling the story just tells what happened instead you actually witnessing it from there point of view. I didn't click as well with the characters because a scene would simply read This happened and this is how so-and-so handled it. Show me. Make me feel what the character feels. This definitely came into play at the end of the story. I wish that scene specifically had a little more depth to it instead of ending rather suddenly.
Overall, a nice look into Allison's past and the sweet relationship between Rick and Anne. If you loved Power definitely give this short a look see.
