I've been ruminating about this story.... Sometimes I get too excited about a book and I swallow it whole and I don't give myself time to let things sink in. Finished the book yesterday and before I ran to goodreads to write a drooling squee covered glittery review, I wanted to sit with it for a minute.Some books are more than pretty covers and vivid prose. Ante Up is BOTH of those and more. It's not quite a love story and yet it is. And not quite a redemption story and yet it is. And not quite suspense but HOLY HELL THE LAST TEN PERCENT!!!
And I'm not really a deep person but when i think about Asha and King, how they came to know each other and what they made of their relationship, I am trying to decide if I............LIKED IT. Not that it's important if I liked it, but did I like it?
Did I root for those characters? Did I want them to be together? Do I see them together forever and for always, riding off into the sunset?
I'll be honest-- King is STILL on my last frazzled nerve. I'm not sure I ever warmed up to him... I'm just not an Alpha Male type. However human he was around his family, I was not into his inability to be open and verbal when it mattered. To make his words match his actions. And I loved that Asha pushed him to be that which he was not. She didn't melt at his feet and she wasn't afraid of him.
And vice versa-- Asha wouldn't trust King further than she could throw him (which wouldn't have been very far) but at some point she was going to have to learn to let all that past relationship baggage GO.
Wrapped up in this kind of almost love story are some great side stories that keep the momentum moving, so much that you cannot put this book down and when you do, you're wondering what's happening.
I just want CCJ to know WE SEE HER, out here making these moves, publishing books that push the envelope of genre and trope. WE SEE YOU. Keep bringin' it.

This story had so many intricate moments and details. I was hooked with the first sentence. "I shot him." This was Asha's opening statement.... With that I was locked, loaded, and ready to rumble!!! Asha was one of this author's very different characters; she was not your average girl next door type. Asha was flawed, beautiful, brainy, troubled, and compassionate to a fault. She was a card shark. Asha made extra money playing and winning big at casino's around Vegas. The night she met the man of mystery and had the one night stand, neither would imagine it would turn into a love thing. King was the mysterious, chauvinistic and handsome owner of the casino where Asha worked. Their interactions were fervently compassionate and so similar in personalities. The chemistry was explosive and sizzled off the pages. Their diatribes were fun and just plain sexy. Ace, King's bodyguard, was another great character. I would love to see a story with Ace and Detective Cree.. All of the characters were dark and mysterious,and the storyline intriguing. This was another Royal Flush for this author. Two of my favorite lines. Its not my fault, if you're not listening." And "If you think that, obviously I've dropped the ball again on making myself clear." I love me some King!
CCJ should be commended for taking a risk with this book. One drawback many books have is authors' need to give them nice tidy endings. This book doesn't fall into that trap. You, the reader, are left to ponder what will happen between King and Asha.
Both King and Asha are extremely flawed and damaged, and their situations are messy...like life. King isn't your typical hero and Asha isn't your typical heroine. This adds to the book's appeal. CCJ developed complex characters with many layers. Each character encountered isn't likable. The lead characters are often unlikable; the imperfections of the main characters are what makes the book interesting AND worth reading. CCJ cleverly integrates poker into the plot. It's a metaphor for King and Asha's relationship and Asha's life as well as those of her family members.
Another intriguing aspect about this book is CCJ allowed the book to have multiple alpha males. Oftentimes, authors will make the hero an alpha male and the anti-hero is some wuss who cowers in the presence of the hero or is displayed as weak in comparison to the hero. All three of the main men in this book -- King, Cree, and even Dorian -- were alpha males in their own right. Cree NOR Dorian ever backed down from King. Thank you, Jesus!!! Finally...another author, one of the very few, who knows it's okay to feature more than one alpha male in a story. It's annoying to read books where the alpha male hero is almost impossibly perfect and damn near GOD-like compared to the other men in a book.
CCJ's gamble paid off and the result is a very good, interesting book. Do like the title and 'Ante Up' for an enjoyable read.
I was all in with these two. Asha and King had great chemistry and kept me engaged to what would happen next. I love when I forget I'm reading and get so caught up in the book. I don't want to give to much up but Asha who is the constant savior and protector finally has her armor in King. CCJ did an amazing job with this one. You better "Ante Up". Oh and I loved the "Connecticut Kings and Young Lord" plug. Only real CCJ and LB readers will catch that.😜
